2. UNITS AND MEASUREMENTS 2.1 INTRODUCTION Units: The certain basic, arbitrarily chosen, internationally accepted reference standards are called units. Example : kilogram, metre, metre per second, etc. Measurement: The comparision of a physical quantity with a certain basic, arbitrarily chosen, internationally accepted reference standard is called its measurement. Classification of units: (i) Fundamental or base units: The units for the fundamental or base quantities are called Fundamental or base units. They are not derived from/independent on other units. Example : metre, kilogram, second, etc. (ii) Derived units: The units which can be expressed as the combination of the base units are called derived units.
